Masonry is commonly used for exterior wall construction. Brick and concrete block, as well as architectural block and stone commonly used as veneer systems, as well as being incorporated in solid masonry wall construction. Specialty materials include natural stone (such limestone and sandstone), manufactured stone, and glass block.
Structural masonry generally comprises concrete blocks with high compressive strength, and is filled with structural mortar and steel reinforcement. Generally, masonry systems provide a long service life; however, periodic repairs and isolated replacement are required when systems are highly exposed or require additional moisture control measures.
